From Virginia Heffernen:

1.       My elementary, middle, and high school teachers could have had us do more projects or just any type if school work on the computer instead of basically nothing accept using the computer for research and to type papers.

2.       The type of technology I thought I would be using with my future career would be computers to store information, and other then that not much because I would most likely be working with my hands a lot and writing information. I believe college will help me with having to use the computer more in my future; I’ll be more familiar with certain things.

3.       I feel like I write better in a more relaxed scene than a blog or an email, I would rather write down my thoughts and things then put them on a blog or email. I’d also rather call someone and tell them something rather than an email.

4.       I would have my student’s do a lot of work on the computer but be understandable if the computer had a problem, which a lot of teachers are understandable considering you never know what could happen to a computer at any time. I would give out projects, papers, and assignments online and have the students get used to using the computer more but I would also give them assignments on paper and other things on paper so they don’t fully get used to everything being on the computer.

5.       I don’t agree with the tone of this piece I believe we should prepare people for what is going on and what is going to happen in the future instead of not preparing them at all for something that doesn’t exist yet. Yes, we don’t know what the future holds but it’s better to be prepared for something that will most likely be in the future that will only get more fancy and learn everything about how it is now and eventually work your way up from there.

Summary and Response

Sherman Alexi learned how to read a young age and he wasn’t taught how to read by a teacher or parent he taught himself how to read, not many young kids can actually do that. He was already smart, he taught himself how to read by looking at pictures in Superman comic books with all the pictures and all the detail of them. He mentioned that his dad loved books and always had so many books in the house which made him want to love books and that’s what he did. Literacy was important to him because his dad loved it so much and he wanted to be just like his dad. This isn’t essential to me because I learned reading a whole different way. I learned how to read a lot easier than he did and I had more resources than he did when I learned how to read.

My Timeline

1st grade- Learned how to read. I wanted to read all the time, and was always the first one in line for the book fairs. I bought books all the time from garage sales or the school. I’d also donate a lot of books when I was done reading them; I wanted other kids like me to enjoy them
2nd grade- I got into the Junie B. Jones books and read those for quite some time, I loved them and had every single one of them. Read them constantly and read them all more than once.
3rd grade- writing was a huge struggle because we were required to write in cursive, reading was more important to me then, I’d fall asleep with a book on my face almost every night.
4th grade- I really got into “older girl” magazines that my mom would let me get, I read those over and over again until I got a new one.
5th grade- always got the same book from the library to read because I loved it so much.
6th grade- I was in a reading class because I struggled with reading even though I loved it, I wasn’t at the pace that I should have been with the other kids. I was very embarrassed and that affected my love for reading, I thought I wasn’t good enough to read.
7th grade- found out I didn’t have to read as much unless it was my textbook, stopped reading as much
8th- Read only the child called it and a few other books by the same author. Also read a lot of poems and began to write them and songs.
9th grade- didn’t read unless it was required for class, got too busy.
10th grade- barely read the books that were required because they were boring and I was told to read them, I wasn’t given the option and since it was boring I didn’t want to.
11th grade- read the required books and liked some of them but looked forward to watching the movies when we were done reading the novel.
12th grade- read the book 1984 for class, it was an awesome book, and I loved it. It made me want to read more stories just like it.
Summer- I’ve wanted to begin reading different series of books because of the movies; I’ve heard the books are way better and I wanted to be the judge of that since the movies were so good. Never came around to it because of work but I will eventually.
Freshman year in college- Reading required books, trying to find some time to read novels between school, homework, and work. When I’m at work I read all the books to all the children and watch their reactions, hoping their reactions stay that way and they keep asking people to teach them and read to them until they learn how to read. I hope their love for reading stays like it is forever and not let technology take over their life in the future.

Why is Writing Important?

My career choice for the future is to become a veterinarian, with a major in biology. There are a lot of different types of writing and communication skills I will need to gain to be able to succeed. Some of those skills include, being able to talk more to people and not be so shy, I need to come out of my shell and become more friendly right away instead of letting them some to me and start the conversation, if I am going to succeed and be the best vet I can be I need to make that change before I go into it, I should also use another communication skill and speak up when I need help or have questions, that’s a skill I lack a lot and I need to use it to be able to succeed with my biology major. Another skill I will be using is writing out more information, especially when I need to know something or remember something about a certain animal, I need to improve my writing more often skill so I can get used to writing a lot and not run out of things to write about. Writing can come in handy when I’m doing labs for my biology classes, I can write down a lot of information I need to know so it will be helpful to me with the lab and future experiences with other labs or worksheets. Also after a long day at work I believe writing is very peaceful and coming home and writing would be a great way for me to relax, when you write you can write about anything and everything therefore I could easily get whatever anger or frustrations I have from the day or the previous days or even if I’m happy I can write about it when I get home. I could use writing with my career choice many different ways of writing and communication, I believe I could improve a lot of my communication and writing skills to be able to succeed in my career choice.
